This tour is directed by Shelby Saberon, archaeologist and Peru expert, and combines Machu Picchu and other Inca ruins in the Andes with an Add On to the Amazon River headwaters. This particular tour is our luxury version with the very finest accommodations available in each region, providing an incredible and unmatched way to experience Peru and its main attractions.
Machu Picchu and the Inca (the main tour), November 14-21, 2010:
- Experience Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World! Set upon the pinnacle of an Andes mountain, this ruin has to be the most spectacular ruin to visit in all of the Americas, and for many is a must see in places to visit in one’s lifetime.
- Explore Cuzco, the capital of the Inca Empire. See the great Sun Temple ruins and view many of the original palace foundations of Inca emperors with colonial buildings built over the tops. Shop for amazing arts and crafts, world class jewelry, paintings, and more.
- View the majestic Andes Mountains, second only to the Himalayas in height, and home to colorful native Peruvians, descendants of the Incas and other Peruvian civilizations.
- Take a train ride through the Andes from dry mountain valleys down to lower cloud forests, a trip you won’t ever forget.
- Visit several Inca ruins set in stunning settings in the Sacred Valley of the Inca and view llamas, alpacas, the great Andean Condor, the fascinating torrent duck, and other animals of the Andes.
- See Lima, Peru’s capital, located on the Pacific coast.
- Wonder at the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuman, an engineering marvel where a knife blade won’t fit between the seamless joints of massive stones.
Amazon River Add On, November 12-14, 2010:
- Explore the Amazon at its headwaters, with a chance to see crocodiles, capybara (the world’s largest rodent), giant river otters, turtles, several south American monkey species, macaws, parrots, giant lilly pads, and more!
- Climb high up into the jungle tops on canopy walkways and see an entirely different world than exists at ground level.
- Hike through the dense jungle, viewing towering trees and other amazing plant and animal life and then take a canoe ride on a pristine lake. Spot numerous species of jungle, lake, and river birds, monkeys, and possibly the elusive giant river otter.
- Enjoy fabulous cuisine, laze in hammocks, and learn from our expert jungle guides at an incredible jungle lodge, the most luxurious on the river in Peru. We stay in the Amazon in five-star style.
